Joint Injection

A joint injection is a targeted injection into any place where two bones move against each other and are surrounded by a joint capsule. They typically consist of some kind of low-dose steroid along with a local anesthetic for pain relief.

Joint injections are performed to reduce the inflammation and/or swelling of tissue in the joint’s space. This is going to reduce the pain in the joint and its surrounding areas.

During the procedure, a small needle will be inserted through your skin and tissue. Injection points typically include: shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, and knees. This can sometimes be uncomfortable for a patient, so we like to use a local anesthetic that will numb the skin for your comfort. The injection will only take a few minutes.

Afterwards, you should feel that your pain is greatly reduced, which is due to the local anesthetic. Unfortunately, this will only last a few hours and your pain will return for the next day or two. You should start noticing pain relief around the 3rd or 5th day.

If you are allergic to any of the medications to be injected, if you are on a blood thinning medication, if you have an active infection going on, or if you have a poorly controlled diabetes or heart disease, you should not have a joint injection, or you should postpone the injection until your overall health improves.
