Stress Reduction and Its Effect on Health Overall

Stress is a normal part of life.
Stress allows us to respond to different situations and pull through them.  Unfortunately for many of us, we experience stress at abnormally high levels on a weekly basis.

When this much stress is absorbed and stored by the body, it can lead to several health issues.

Some of the most common results of unchecked stress include:

  • Alcohol Abuse

  • Anxiety

  • Change in Sex Drive

  • Chest pain

  • Depression

  • Drug Abuse

  • Fatigue

  • Feeling Overwhelmed

  • Headaches

  • Irritability or Anger

  • Lack of Motivation or Focus

  • Muscle Tension or Pain

  • Overeating

  • Restlessness

  • Sleep Problems

  • Stomach Upset

  • Social Withdrawal

  • Tobacco Use

  • Undereating

Not a short list is it?

As you can see, stress can affect your body and mind and make sure quality of life diminish. If left untreated too long, it can even be the source of heart disease and other chronic ailments like high blood pressure and diabetes.

Reducing stress will help deter or alleviate the negative symptoms it causes.  It will also help you feel better in general.

How to Reduce Stress and the Side Effects it can Cause
Just about everyone feels stress.  Fortunately, there are simple steps you can take to reduce it and its side effects.

These include:

  • Getting Enough Sleep

  • Setting Aside “Me Time” for Hobbies

  • Regular Exercise

  • Relaxation Techniques

  • Keeping a Positive Attitude, No Matter What

  • Socializing with Positive People (Note: avoid getting involved in drama)

Keep in mind that active ways to reduce stress are better than inactive ways, like TV and video game playing.  This is not to say you shouldn’t do them.  Just make sure you have a balance of activity and inactivity.

And of course, a healthy diet that avoids excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol and fatty or processed foods will make the other items we’ve listed that much more successful.
